Admissions


Gauhati University has separate guidelines regarding admission to Graduate, Masters and Research Programs. Academic qualifications from Universities or Boards of Higher Education, recognised as equivalent by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) shall be the sole criterion for admission under these regulations.


An International student is one who is a citizen of another country. International Students can seek admission to various Graduate, Postgraduate and Research Programmes under the following categories


  • Self-financed Students (Full programme)
    Students who can finance their education here in India without any support from any other sources.

  • ICCR : Cultural Exchange Fellowship Programmes (Governemnet of India)
    International students with ICCR fellowship (Government of India) desirous of admission under this Fellowship Programme are required to apply through the Indian High Commission / Embassy as the case may be, in their respective countries. They will send the application to ICCR, Government of India and then ICCR will forward the application/s to various Universities / Institutes in India as the case may be for consideration. In case the applicant is found suitable for admission, admission offer letter will be sent to him / her through Indian Council for Cultural Relations, New Delhi.

  • Visiting Students under Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)
    Admission of International students / NRI under the MoU will be made in accordance with the terms and conditions spelt out in the MoU agreed to between Gauhati University and the Country/University / Institution concerned. A list of the institutions with whom we have MoUs can be found here.


Graduate Programme


Gauhati University offers Bachelor of Technology (BTech) under four heads - Biotechnology, Information Technology, Computer Science, and and Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE).

  • International Students with subjects Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in 12th standard in science are eligible for admission into the B.Tech programme.


Masters Programme

An international student should meet the following criteria to get admission into postgraduate programmes of Gauhati University

  • TOFEL / IELTS score to show the proficiency of English if the applicant's mother tongue is not English. Although the TOFEL / IELTS score should not be older than two years.

  • Proof of financial support

  • If an International student has not gone through the eligibility programme / course as stated in the minimum eligibility conditions for Masters Admission to Gauhati University, Admission Committee of Gauhati University will take the final decision.


Doctoral (PhD) Programme


  • The admission process into the PhD programme of Gauhati University is a two-step process: common entrance test (known as GU-RET) and counselling process. An International Applicant is not required to appear in the GU-RET. The Counseling process for International Applicants may be carried out through other methods of available technology, for example, video conferencing, Skype etc.

  • An International Applicant with not less than 55 (fifty five) percent of marks or equivalent grade in the concerned subject can apply for admission into the PhD programme of Gauhati University in a subject in the Faculties of Arts, Science, Commerce, Management, Law, Technology, Fine Arts, Engineering and Medical Science or other professional subjects of Gauhati University in the respective equivalent qualifying examination.

  • An International Applicant will have to demonstrate proficiency in English either through standardised tests such as TOFEL, IELTS etc. or through a proven record of receiving education in the English Language over a considerable length of time.

  • An International student should produce the proof of financial support or scholarship.

  • While considering International applications, the Department Research Committee (DRC) / Faculty Research Committee (FRC) of the concerned department will take into consideration the merit of the research proposal, reference letters, and scores of standardised tests such as GRE.
